This CUV (Compact Utility Vehicle) was first introduced in the US in 2008. The first generation shared technology with Land Rover as it was developed while the company was owned by Ford. Most of the engineering was done by Volvo in Sweden however the off-road capability is the design of Land Rover and was done in England.
In 2010 Volvo unveiled the “R” design XC60 with color matching body kit, interior and exterior styling differences and a stiffer, competition style suspension. The plug-in hybrid concept Volvo XC60 was previewed in 2012, with a 270 horse power gasoline engine coupled with an 350 hp electric motor which powered the rear wheels – it had a short range of 35 (fully electric) miles and was never sent to market. In 2014 the body was updated with new styling changes but the drive train remained primarily the same. Big changes happened in 2017 when the second generation Volvo XC60 went into production. This was the first change in production of the XC60 after China’s Geely corporation took over. The earlier P2 and P3 platforms were scrapped in favor of a SPA (scalable product architecture) chassis which Volvo introduced in their 2014 XC90 models. All SPA based cars will be offered with a 4 cylinder engine and according to Volvo this newer platform allows them to make significant improvements when it comes to driver safety, which makes sense since it’s a quickly evolving field.
At Berkeley Bob’s we see a fair amount of Volvo XC60 cars. A few of the common repair issues we’ve seen on the production years 2010 – 2015, equipped with 3.0 liter or 3.2 liter engines are a leaking pcv (positive crankcase ventilation) box diaphragm which creates a whistling sound that alerts drivers along with triggering the check engine light. It is a concern that needs to be addressed quickly to prevent the repair cost from escalating, as it can take out other components. Another common repair need is a broken or failing upper engine torque mount. Those familiar with Volvos know about this mount as they all fail after 50,000 miles or so. The driver can listen for noises on hard acceleration after a stop which is usually a tell-tale sign that mount needs replacement. Some of these cars will develop an oil leak from the brake vacuum pump. This pump is driven by the engine camshaft and creates vacuum which is used for the power brake assistance. A leak in the system is a serious condition. It can spew oil out all over the side of the engine, creating smoke and odor when it burns off but more importantly can drain the engine oil to an unsafe level which can lead to engine damage. This type of leak may also minimize the effectiveness of the Volvo XC60 brake assist function.
The later Volvo XC60s, production year 2016 on with 2.0 liter engine also suffer from leaks in the pcv breather box diaphragm which cause noise and check engine light concerns. We’ve seen a number of these cars have problems with fuel injector leaks, making the XC60 run poorly in the morning and can cause the check engine light to come on as well. For those with T8 model XC60s, the twin charging (turbo & supercharger) system develops air leaks in the intake manifold, causing the check engine light to come on, poor fuel economy and can cause loss of power.
